Quartz and quartzite are two countertop materials that are often easily confused with each other. Although the two terms are used interchangeably, their similarity in names and basic quartz foundation is about all that the two materials have in common.

By definition, quartzite is a naturally occurring, extremely compact, hard, granular rock. Quartz on the other hand is a manmade material fabricated from ground quartz, resins, polymers, and pigments.

Before deciding what countertop material is best for your home it’s always best to weigh the pros and cons.

Quartzite

  • More durable than quartz.
  • Since it’s a natural material it can have more variation.
  • Withstands heat well.

Cons:

  • Needs to be sealed because it can be etched or stained by wine, acidic foods, coffee, etc.
  • Less color options are available and colors tend to be lighter.
  • More likely to show seams when installed.
