Kitchen backsplash or no backsplash?

There are lots of trends in kitchen counters, but one that gets a surprising amount of talk is the backsplash.  Some kitchens have one, others don’t.

We’d like to weigh in on what we’ve seen as we’ve worked with people planning their dream kitchen.

Use of the backsplash

A backsplash can have a variety of uses.  First, there is the obvious use that gives it the name it has.  It’s on the back of the counter guarding the wall from anything splashing the wall, damaging it.  This would be particularly bad if you accidently spill something that would potentially stain the wall.  In addition, they’re used to guard the wall from water splashing on it.  With water comes the problem of mold and mildew and no one wants that around their food preparation area.

Kitchen CountersSecond, many hide the fact that the back wall of the kitchen may not be completely symmetrical.  In other words, there might be small but noticeable gaps between the wall and counter.  This is something that you might notice particularly in older homes, but any home will have walls that are not exactly even or straight.  A backsplash will hide those kinds of imperfections while adding an element of style.

Third, many people use the backsplash as a statement.  There’s really no rule that you have to use the same material that you chose for the countertop.  Because of that, some pick a complimentary color stone to add interest.  Some will even use tile or stainless steel as a backsplash.  Anything is possible as long as you consider practicality and style.

Forego the backsplash?

Not everyone wants one and for the most part, that’s a matter of taste and style more than function. For some, they would like freedom to showcase art pieces or have a place for a few more items that are both functional and beautiful in a kitchen.  A lot of it depends on how much you intend on using the kitchen and what kind of space you are in.
